Coherence X6: A New Engine for Native-Feeling Web Apps on Mac

BZG released Coherence X6 on 8 September 2026, and the developer calls it the biggest update to the app in a decade. Coherence turns websites into standalone Mac apps powered by Chrome or another Chromium browser. Version 6 replaces the engine that builds those apps, so the results are lighter, run with Chromium's security sandbox switched on and behave much more like native Mac apps. It also brings a redesigned creation tool, browser data and extension import, rebuilt link routing and support for more browser engines. Anyone who lives in web tools such as a university portal, a learning platform or a browser-based code editor should take a look.

What's new in Coherence X6

A new engine for web apps

The core change is how apps are built. Coherence X6 produces smaller, self-contained app bundles that run from their own location. In practice that means they can be dragged into the Dock like any other app, show the correct icon throughout macOS, group properly in Stage Manager and no longer create duplicate Dock icons. BZG also says they launch faster than before.

Security sandbox enabled

Every app created with Coherence X6 runs with Chromium's security sandbox fully enabled, removing workarounds earlier versions relied on. For apps that hold university logins or cloud documents, that is a meaningful improvement.

A redesigned creation experience

Creating an app now happens on a single canvas inside the main window, with a design inspired by Apple's Liquid Glass. All the options sit in one view, icon fetching is smarter and keyboard navigation has improved, so turning a site into an app takes fewer steps.

Bring your browser data and extensions

You can now import existing browsing data and extensions into a new app as you create it, choosing extensions one by one. Each app keeps its own isolated profile, so a password manager or reference tool can be available in one app without cluttering the others.

Link Forwarding 2.0 and more browser engines

Link forwarding has been rebuilt with a rules editor. You decide which sites and URLs belong inside an app and which should open in your default browser. Coherence X6 also adds Vivaldi and Helium as browser engines alongside options such as Chrome, Brave and Edge, and improves Brave compatibility.

Since then: Coherence X 6.0.1 and 6.1

Version 6.0.1 (14 September 2026) fixed bugs, including browser engines changing unexpectedly while editing an app and launch failures for Vivaldi and Brave-based apps. Coherence X 6.1 (22 September 2026) makes link routing quicker to set up by letting you add several domains to a rule at once, with suggested destinations. Changes to link routing and appearance now save without rebuilding the app. It also fixes duplicate tabs appearing when a browser was set to continue where you left off. Why it matters for students

• Give your learning platform its own app. Turn Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard or your university portal into a Dock app, so coursework deadlines and lecture materials are one click away rather than buried among dozens of browser tabs.
• Separate study from distraction. Because each app has its own profile and window, you can keep study tools apart from social media and streaming in your main browser.
• Research tools with the right extensions. Import only the extensions each app needs, such as a reference manager's browser connector in your library database app, or a grammar checker in your writing tool.
• Keep links where they belong. With the new rules editor, links to your university's domain can stay inside the portal app while everything else opens in your normal browser.
• Coding and collaboration. Web-based tools such as GitHub, Notion, Google Docs or an online IDE feel more like proper desktop apps when they have their own icon, Stage Manager group and window.

• BZG's changelog lists macOS 15 or later for Coherence X6.
• A single-Mac licence costs $39.99. Coherence X6 is a paid upgrade for owners of Coherence X5, who can upgrade for $29.99. Anyone who bought on or after 20 July 2026 gets version 6 free.
