Dabble 3.0: What's New for Student Writers

Dabble 3.0 rolled out between 13 and 15 July 2026, and it is the largest release in the writing app's history. The developers rebuilt Dabble from the ground up, and the headline change is real-time co-authoring: several people can now work in the same project at the same time. Alongside that come track changes, rebuilt comments, a visual version history and a redesigned export. For students on creative writing courses, or anyone drafting a novel alongside their studies, 3.0 turns Dabble from a solo drafting tool into something closer to a shared workshop.

What's new in Dabble 3.0

Real-time co-authoring

Previously, sharing a project meant taking turns. In 3.0, collaborators write in the same project simultaneously, and the owner can hand out four roles: Co-Author for full editing, Editor for suggestions and comments, Reviewer for comments only, and Reader for view-only access. Author colours show who wrote what.

Track changes and comments

Turning on track changes converts your edits into suggestions that can be accepted or rejected, with Original, Difference and Suggestions views. Anyone given the Editor role works in this mode automatically. Comments have been rebuilt as threaded conversations that stay attached to the right passage even as the text changes, with read and unread status and a full Comment History panel.

Review Copies

A Review Copy is a separate copy of your project for a friend, beta reader or editor. Friends share comments with each other, beta readers comment privately, and editors make tracked suggestions. You decide what to merge back into the original.

Version History and Quick Open

The new Time Machine lets you scroll back through earlier states of a project, restore the whole thing, or bring a single document forward. You can also save named checkpoints. Quick Open is a command palette that finds any document or note by fuzzy search, which helps in longer projects.

Planning, reading and exporting

• New Ideas and Notebook areas, richer Notes, an overhauled Plot Grid and a book cover designer.
• Read to Me text-to-speech with speed control and a choice of voices.
• Six colour themes, a separate Light, Dark and Auto switch, and a High Contrast theme.
• Export to Word, Web, Markdown and Google Docs, in either standard manuscript format or Dabble's own format.
• A write-ahead journal that records your work on the device before it syncs.

Since then

Dabble has shipped frequent point releases since launch. Highlights include:

• 3.0.60 (25 August 2026): Read to Me now works on mobile and plays continuously; daily writing goals let you choose whether pasted text and deletions count; your personal dictionary works offline.
• 3.0.81 and 3.0.82 (17 September 2026): you can join the 60-Day Novel Challenge from inside Dabble, with progress tracked towards 50,000 words; plot points and scenes can be inserted between existing cards; nine more interface languages were added.
• 3.0.85 (23 September 2026): undo and redo now cover renaming, moving and trashing items, plot grid changes and goal edits, not just typing.

Why it matters for students

Dabble is built for fiction and long-form narrative rather than referenced essays, so its value is clearest for creative writing students.

• Workshop feedback: send a Review Copy to classmates as beta readers, so each person's notes stay private and your draft stays untouched until you choose what to accept.
• Tutor comments: give a supervisor the Editor role and their changes arrive as tracked suggestions rather than silent edits to your manuscript.
• Group projects: co-writing a script, anthology or interactive fiction piece no longer needs a shared document passed around by email.
• Drafting to deadlines: goals with deadlines and adjustable daily targets help pace a portfolio or dissertation-length creative project, and Version History makes it easy to recover a cut scene.
• Proofreading: hearing your prose read aloud with Read to Me is a quick way to catch clumsy sentences before submission.
• Submitting work: exporting to Word or Google Docs fits the formats most courses ask for.

Requirements and upgrade details

• Dabble runs in any modern browser and can be installed as an app from Chrome, Edge or Safari on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android and Chromebook.
• A downloadable desktop app is still available for Mac, Windows and Linux.
• Dabble is offline-first: edits save to your device and sync when you reconnect. Avoid private browsing windows, where your browser may not save work locally.
• Dabble updates itself automatically, so there is no separate 3.0 version to download and install.
