PowerPhotos 3.0: What's New for Students

Fat Cat Software released PowerPhotos 3.0 on 16 April 2025, the first major version of its Apple Photos companion in several years. The headline additions are batch metadata editing, a proper multi-library search engine and a photo browser that can now do much of the housekeeping you would otherwise have to do inside Photos itself. If you keep more than one Photos library, or you have a phone full of lecture slides, fieldwork shots and personal pictures all tangled together, this is the release that makes PowerPhotos worth a fresh look.

What's new in PowerPhotos 3.0

Keyboard-driven metadata editing

You can now edit titles, captions and keywords directly in PowerPhotos, moving from one photo to the next with the Tab key so you never have to reach for the trackpad. Select a group of photos and you can change their metadata in one pass, with a templating system that can insert incrementing numbers and dates. That turns a job like labelling 80 lab photos as "Sample 01" to "Sample 80" into a few seconds of work.

Advanced search across libraries

A new indexing engine supports complex searches built from nested and/or conditions, and those searches can run across one library or several at once. Criteria go beyond the basics to include file size, video length and pixel dimensions, and you can save a search to reuse later. Finding every video over five minutes, or every image below a certain resolution, no longer means scrolling.

A more capable browser and viewer

The photo browser can now move photos between albums, delete items and reorganise albums, with changes reflected live. PowerPhotos also has its own built-in viewer, which Fat Cat says loads faster than before and shows detailed information about each photo in an inspector pane.

Library-level operations

• Move or copy between libraries: photos can be copied or moved, with the originals removed from the source once the transfer succeeds.
• Multiple library selection: select several libraries at once to merge them, search them for duplicates or delete them.
• Broader undo: undo now covers more editing actions and configuration changes.

Since then

Version 3.0 has been followed by a steady run of free updates for PowerPhotos 3 owners:

• 3.1 (September 2025) brought updates for macOS 26 Tahoe.
• 3.2 (November 2025) added a large set of export options, including embedded XMP metadata, optional XMP sidecar files, exporting originals in their native format, and full-library export that recreates your album and folder structure.
• 3.3 (April 2026) introduced more than 30 Shortcuts actions covering albums, metadata, exports and library merging.
• 3.4 (June 2026) focused on albums, with a filterable album list, album duplication, "Add to Album" commands and a dedicated Album menu.

Why it matters for students

Most students use their iPhone camera as a note-taking tool: whiteboards, slides, textbook pages, poster presentations, lab results. Over three or four years that material piles up alongside holiday and social photos, and Apple Photos gives you few tools to separate it out. PowerPhotos 3 fills that gap.

• Separate study and personal libraries. Keep a dedicated library for each module or for your dissertation, then move or copy photos into it without losing the originals' details.
• Label research images properly. Batch captions and keywords with numbered templates suit fieldwork, lab or art portfolio images that need consistent naming before they go into a report.
• Find things fast before a deadline. Saved searches across libraries make it easy to pull every screenshot or every video from a particular week without guessing which library it ended up in.
• Reclaim storage on a small SSD. Duplicate detection across several selected libraries helps recover space on a base-model MacBook.
• Hand in or archive cleanly. Since 3.2, exporting originals with XMP metadata, or exporting a whole library as folders, is a sensible way to archive a project or share images with a supervisor.

Requirements and upgrade details

• PowerPhotos 3 requires macOS Sonoma 14.0 or later. PowerPhotos 2 supported macOS 12, so check your Mac before upgrading.
• Version 3.0 is a paid upgrade for PowerPhotos 1 and 2 owners, who get 50% off by entering their existing licence key at checkout.
