one sec 6.0: One-Step Setup and What It Means for Students

one sec 6.0 arrived on 14 September 2026, and it tackles the one thing that put many people off the app: setup. one sec slows you down before you open distracting apps by showing a short intervention, such as a breathing exercise, before the app loads. Until now, connecting it to each app meant building Shortcuts automations by hand. With 6.0 and Apple's latest major iOS release, that manual process is gone. If you have tried one sec before and given up during setup, or you want a calmer phone before exam season, this is the version to look at.

What's new in one sec 6.0

One-step setup

The main change is that you no longer need to create Shortcuts automations yourself. You tap Add Intervention and one sec imports the automation automatically. The developer describes this as replacing a technical, ten-step process with a single step, and says it was the most common complaint from users over the years. The change depends on the new iOS release, so you will need your device up to date to benefit.

Accessibility and design

• Significant accessibility work, particularly for VoiceOver users.
• Refinements to fit Apple's Liquid Glass design.
• Bug fixes and performance improvements throughout.

Since 5.0: the road to 6.0

6.0 is the latest step in a busy year. Several earlier releases added features that make the simpler setup more useful:

• 5.0 (13 September 2025): a new Block tab showing upcoming and past blocks, a Tips tab, a conversational reflection intervention that uses an on-device language model, and an improved Good Morning Countdown.
• 5.2 (13 March 2026): Re-Interventions, which interrupt you again after a set time in an app, began working on websites through the Safari extension. Strict blocks were also tightened so Screen Time permissions cannot be re-authorised mid-block.
• 5.2.6 (2 June 2026): on iOS 26.5 or later, Re-Interventions and delayed interventions no longer require tapping through notifications.
• 5.3 (30 August 2026): several block sessions can run at the same time and be paused and resumed; blocks can be opened from widgets and Live Activities; custom intentions gained emojis, history, per-app settings and iCloud sync; and the Follow the Dot intervention was redesigned.

Why it matters for students

one sec's approach is to add friction rather than block apps outright. The developer reports research collaborations with the Max Planck Institute and others, and you can read about them on the one sec research page. In student terms, that translates to some practical uses:

• Revision sessions: with the simpler setup, adding a pause in front of TikTok, Instagram or YouTube takes seconds, so there is no excuse to put it off until after exams.
• Overlapping blocks: since 5.3 you can run a lecture-hours block and an evening revision block at once, and pause one without cancelling the other.
• Intentions: custom intentions let you say why you are opening an app, such as checking a group project chat, which makes it easier to notice when a quick check becomes an hour.
• Essay writing on a Mac: one sec runs on macOS too, and with the Safari extension the same approach covers distracting websites while you write coursework.
• Sleep before exams: Good Morning Countdown and scheduled blocks help keep your phone out of the way first thing and last thing.

• one sec requires iOS 15.0 or later on iPhone, iPadOS 15.0 or later on iPad, and macOS 14.0 or later on Mac.
• The automatic one-step setup relies on Apple's newest major iOS release, so update your iPhone first.
